Irrigation Development

In order to provide an outlet for their coal, Galt Coal Mines of
Lethbridge entered into railway construction in southern Alberta. In
return for their effort they received large grants of land from the
Government. The company wanted some of the lands brought under
irrigation to make them more attractive and productive. The Alberta
Railway and Irrigation Company was formed to construct the main
canal to irrigate these lands.l3 It was through the efforts of Charles
Ora Card that in April 1898 the Mormon church entered into an
agreement with the Alberta Railway and Irrigation Company to con-
struct the main canal to supply water to irrigate large acreages of
lands in the Magrath, Raymond and Stirling areas. Card advertised
for men in Utah and other Mormon settlements to come and work on
the project. They were to receive pay both in cash and in land.l4
Through these efforts, the Mormon settlers introduced irrigation
to southern Alberta and in return were given the land they needed
for settlement and agriculture.

The directors of the company to build the canal included Charles
Ora Card, C. A. Magrath, E. T. Galt and W. D. Barclay.13

some barclay brothers and sister

the label that says boyd should say lewis aka cookie

uncle charlie and the teacher

well, beth was talking about aunt dorothy showing up at school and getting angry because they kept giving her kids bibles. let me tell you about uncle charlie showing up at school one day. then i will try to find a picture of him.

me and my cousin ricky barclay were always in the same room in school because he had a speech problem due to some operation on his tongue. the teachers always let me interpret/ answer for ricky because he was difficult to understand. early on in 6th grade, a teacher who happened to be a black man, didn't believe that ricky had a real problem. this was not long after integration, although we were not raised to be racist in particular. so, the teacher starts mocking and berating ricky over the way he talked. i tried to tell him that ricky couldn't help it, and the teacher then yelled at me and told me off. ricky was so upset that he started crying, as he was very sensitive about this. after school, aunt ada calls to ask me what happened. the next morning as the class was just getting in, who shows up but uncle charlie. if you never saw him, he was a formidible man. tall and big. he appears in class with a pistol stuck into his waistband or pocket, i'm not sure which, and says to me in a very loud voice, "where is the g.. d.... n..... who sent ricky home crying? well, the teacher turned 3 shades of white and looked like he was going to pass out. uncle charlie told him in no uncertain terms to "never pick on my son again". then went home. that was the end of the matter. the teacher never mistreated ricky again. just think if it happened nowadays.

well, that's enough for now.

random comments from facebook @ uncle lewis aka cookie

I don't know anything about cookie joining a commune. Maybe James does.

from what little dad told me about cookie i believe that is something he would do. hell, i wouldn't be surprised if he started it

Well, i can only tell you so much about Mrs. Barclay. She was my grandmother and she died when i was 5 years old. She had been living in Hacks Point with Uncle Gilbert, but came to stay with us in Earleville. Her bedroom was our living room. She had  suffered from a stroke that left her unable to get around. Besides having me read to her from her book of Robert Burns, and yelling at us kids a lot as we ran around the house, i really do not know anything else about her.

My Dad said she had an electric car when they lived in Tennessee. She obviously liked moving around and buying property. She also liked to take part in contests. She would cut coupons and entry forms every day. She would write to various companies with commentary and advice on how to improve their products. I doubt if too many actually listened, but some did send her a pleasant response. She enjoyed writing poetry, and claimed to be a direct descendent of Janet Wilson, the Aunt of Robbie Burns, who taught him how to write. That may have been wishful thinking on her part as my Dad said “everyone in Scotland claims to be related to Burns”.

She passed away in 1961, while asleep in our living room. She then proceeded to lie “in state” for the better part of the week. Where she is buried is a mystery to me. My Dad always said it was in Templeville, MD. but there is no record. Some have suggested the Cecilton, MD. cemetary. In any event, she was born in June of 1877, according to the census. Married George Barclay in 1899, and they lived at that time in Armstrong, PA

on the run

initial post

this blog is for any barclay to post photos and stories on. you don't even have to be a barclay. if you just have an interesting photo or story to share, feel free to post it here. the story does not have to be 100% true for that matter. as long as it is not malicious or hurtful. i will of course be the judge of that.

i will be posting anything i feel like discussing. this may include anecdotal family tales, things i feel strongly about, current events, local history, my ford pickup truck, or perhaps a suggested topic. all barclays are extremely opinionated and don't mind arguing a point, valid or not.

look for regular postings by yours truly
