uncle charlie and the teacher

well, beth was talking about aunt dorothy showing up at school and getting angry because they kept giving her kids bibles. let me tell you about uncle charlie showing up at school one day. then i will try to find a picture of him.

me and my cousin ricky barclay were always in the same room in school because he had a speech problem due to some operation on his tongue. the teachers always let me interpret/ answer for ricky because he was difficult to understand. early on in 6th grade, a teacher who happened to be a black man, didn't believe that ricky had a real problem. this was not long after integration, although we were not raised to be racist in particular. so, the teacher starts mocking and berating ricky over the way he talked. i tried to tell him that ricky couldn't help it, and the teacher then yelled at me and told me off. ricky was so upset that he started crying, as he was very sensitive about this. after school, aunt ada calls to ask me what happened. the next morning as the class was just getting in, who shows up but uncle charlie. if you never saw him, he was a formidible man. tall and big. he appears in class with a pistol stuck into his waistband or pocket, i'm not sure which, and says to me in a very loud voice, "where is the g.. d.... n..... who sent ricky home crying? well, the teacher turned 3 shades of white and looked like he was going to pass out. uncle charlie told him in no uncertain terms to "never pick on my son again". then went home. that was the end of the matter. the teacher never mistreated ricky again. just think if it happened nowadays.

well, that's enough for now.
