Well, i can only tell you so much about Mrs. Barclay. She was my grandmother and she died when i was 5 years old. She had been living in Hacks Point with Uncle Gilbert, but came to stay with us in Earleville. Her bedroom was our living room. She had suffered from a stroke that left her unable to get around. Besides having me read to her from her book of Robert Burns, and yelling at us kids a lot as we ran around the house, i really do not know anything else about her.
My Dad said she had an electric car when they lived in Tennessee. She obviously liked moving around and buying property. She also liked to take part in contests. She would cut coupons and entry forms every day. She would write to various companies with commentary and advice on how to improve their products. I doubt if too many actually listened, but some did send her a pleasant response. She enjoyed writing poetry, and claimed to be a direct descendent of Janet Wilson, the Aunt of Robbie Burns, who taught him how to write. That may have been wishful thinking on her part as my Dad said “everyone in Scotland claims to be related to Burns”.
She passed away in 1961, while asleep in our living room. She then proceeded to lie “in state” for the better part of the week. Where she is buried is a mystery to me. My Dad always said it was in Templeville, MD. but there is no record. Some have suggested the Cecilton, MD. cemetary. In any event, she was born in June of 1877, according to the census. Married George Barclay in 1899, and they lived at that time in Armstrong, PA

She certainly was an interesting person, raising those kids, it seems, mostly by herself yet she didn't seem to shy away from change. I know I only had 2 children and it scared me to death to think I might do something that would impact their lives in a negative way. I do wish I had known her, and I would like to know more about her, what her life was like as a child, as a young woman, where she lived as a child, and what her parents and siblings were like. I find her names for her children most interesting.
i wish i knew more about her and her husband too. i don't think our parents really knew their parents. maybe we should think about that with our own kids...what do they really know about us? maybe as we post more photos and stories on here we will find out more about our family...
Deb, did you get the info that James took to Shirley? I still have not called him, but I know that he has researched this. Rachel
no, rachel. all i saw were the comments about the 2 pictures of the man and woman. i will try to put that on here if i can.
my poor dad the only one of the kids to look at all like there mother. and he in his last years looked more like her twin than son.
does anyone know for sure what year she had her stroke? or where she was living at the time?
from what little dad ever said about it I'm guessing she was still living at Baltimore Corners. He said that both he and mom road in the ambulance with her to the hospital.
in the 30's and 40's when there was very few good roads. I'm at a total lost as to how the Barclay boys got from Caroline county to Cecil county.
i do know how and why my dad moved us there, but how did all the others fine there way there?
well, some of the brothers got jobs at chrysler auto (or tank??) that would mean it would be much more convenient to live in cecil co. my dad was living in either chester or wilmington, and would come down to hacks point to stay with gilbert & his mother only on his days off. he then moved to baltimore, where he had a job at some railroad yard. my dad only moved to cecil county when my mom was given the house on crystal beach rd by her grandmother. i think that was around 1954.
i know uncle gilbert loved the water and boating. he bought the lot in-between his house & the river so he'd always have a nice view. maybe thats what brought him to hacks point?
